Many of these things you want local governments to do have costs, which means you are just arguing that local governments – local taxpayers – should subsidize the investments of private firms in what you continue to claim is a very competitive market.

This is at odds with many of your other claims regarding how free markets are supposed to work. Color me confused.

We have long-argued about what those real (monopoly) costs (rents) are. Barriers – even local ones – are still barriers (including all the kick-backs and “graft”). Consistent with public safety needs and taxpayer concerns, where they can be reduced they should be.

Clearly, government’s monopoly control over its (our) assets is “artful,” being turned on or off in an arbitrary and capricious manner. That doesn’t serve the marketplace.
